Junior Leadership Granbury

Junior Leadership Granbury is a program sponsored by Leadership Granbury for area high school juniors. The program is designed to create an awareness of our community resources and needs, enhance leadership skills and help identify future leaders. Members of the Junior Leadership class will visit with our city and county leaders, visit local businesses, meet with school officials and learn about the services offered by our local charities. The classes offer learning opportunities and challenge students to become actively involved in building a better tomorrow in Granbury.

What does it cost to participate?
Tuition is free and dinners are provided at the meetings.

How do I apply?
You must complete an application and submit a one page essay. Applications can be obtained on the Leadership Granbury website at www.leadershipgranbury.com or from your school counselor.

What is the deadline to apply?
It is due by the last business day of  August at the beginning of your junior year of high school. Applications should generally be available at the end of your sophomore year.

Where do I send my application?
Applications should be returned to the class leader, whose address is on the application. DO NOT return your application to your school counselor.

Do I have to write an essay with my application?
Yes. You are required to submit a one page essay with your application discussing topics described in the application.

How many people are accepted to be in the class?
We generally limit the class size to 25 students.

When do we meet?
The class meets once a month from September to May. We meet once a month in the evening from October to May, usually from 6:00 to 8:00. Dinner is provided. The first class meeting in September is a mandatory team building retreat at a local ropes course with the Adult Leadership Granbury class. This retreat will be during the school day. The retreat is designed to develop team building skills and is the first step in creating bonds and friendships that will last a lifetime.

Where do we meet?
The location changes each month, but your class leader will give you plenty of notice about when and where you will be meeting.

What do we do at the meetings?
There will be a different topic each month. Among other opportunities, you will meet with city and county officials, tour the jail, visit local businesses, meet with representatives of area charities, learn about financial management and be exposed to different leadership opportunities.

What can I get out of participating?
You will learn about your community and how you can make it better through participation in various activities now and in the future. Your leadership skills will be enhanced and you will develop relationships with community leaders. Graduates are also eligible to apply for scholarships offered by the Leadership Granbury Alumni Association.

What are the requirements to graduate from Junior Leadership?
You are required to attend the mandatory team building retreat in September and the seven to eight evening sessions that run October through May. Any student missing more than two sessions will be required to make up sessions to graduate. Make up sessions will be available, usually through volunteer work with charities or with city events.

Am I eligible to apply for a Leadership Granbury scholarship?
Graduates of Junior Leadership Granbury are eligible for scholarships through the Leadership Granbury Alumni Association. Additional information on the scholarship program is available on the Leadership Granbury website at www.leadershipgranbury.com or through your school counselor.

Will there be a graduation ceremony?
Yes. There is a graduation ceremony in May with plaques presented to the graduates. Winners of the Leadership Granbury Alumni Association Scholarships are also announced. This ceremony is generally a dinner program with the Adult Leadership Granbury class.
