April 2 was our last meeting of the year for Junior Leadership Granbury. This month we took a field trip to Austin. We were fortunate enough to get to use one of the new GISD tour busses. It was so much more comfortable than the basic yellow school bus. We met Representative Jim Keffer on the Capitol steps for a group photo, and then he took us on a tour of the floor of the House of Representatives. He talked about how bills become laws and answered the many questions our students asked. Next Ben Stratmann, Senator Brian Birdwell’s Chief of Staff, met us. Ben took us to the floor of the Senate, where he gave us a tour and answered many questions. Regrettably, Senator Birdwell was called out of town and could not be with us. After having lunch in the Members’ Lounge, we took a guided tour of the Capitol. We learned many things about the lovely building and what goes on there. From there we went to the Capitol Visitors Center and saw a film about how the Capitol was funded and built. The last activity before leaving Austin was a stop at the famous Amy’s Ice Cream Shop on the UT campus. During the whole day Decker, Baylee’s guide dog for blind that she is training, accompanied us.
